downtownfrombehind (DFB) is a photographic series capturing subjects riding their bike from behind on some 200+ streets, avenues and lanes below 14th street in New York City.

The result is an environmental portrait for each street and subject with a goal to highlight a set of individuals, emerging and established, each uniquely contributing; culturally, socially and physically, to make this part of the city what it is today.

The project has been widely covered in the press, from New York Times, Huffington Post, Coolhunting, Vogue, Nylon Magazine and many blogs (thankyou).

Subjects photographed to date include industrial designers, architects, creative directors, restauranteurs, entrepreneurs, hoteliers, artists and academics.

CLINTON STREET.

CLINTON STREET, Jamie Massam, ACD/Art Director for Downtownfrombehind.

After long stints in London and Sydney, Jamie, like the rest of adland, eventually and not reluctantly made New York home several years ago. Most days a week we call him an ACD and Art Director. One night a week young girls call himĀ ’Professor’ at Pratt University in Manhattan where he teaches a senior portfolio class. That t-shirt hanging out the back of his jeans is from his clothing label called Mahooda (we’d like one). Jamie is the only person to do a front wheel stand in a DFB shot, that and be hit by a light commercial truck on his way to our shoot. DFB encourages helmets and safe riding, really we do. Fashion is a close second. DFB.
