downtownfrombehind (DFB) is a photographic series capturing subjects riding their bike from behind on some 200+ streets, avenues and lanes below 14th street in New York City.

The result is an environmental portrait for each street and subject with a goal to highlight a set of individuals, emerging and established, each uniquely contributing; culturally, socially and physically, to make this part of the city what it is today.

The project has been widely covered in the press, from New York Times, Huffington Post, Coolhunting, Vogue, Nylon Magazine and many blogs (thankyou).

Subjects photographed to date include industrial designers, architects, creative directors, restauranteurs, entrepreneurs, hoteliers, artists and academics.

CHURCH STREET.

CHURCH STREET, Kiel Mead, Designer (industrial, jewelry, furniture and things) for Downtownfrombehind.

Kiel started chipping into the New York design scene with a collection of jewelry cast from mundane objects. (You’re probably wearing one of his ‘forget me not’ rings now ladies). After getting a decent amount of press and a noteworthy following, Kiel decided something must be done to give up and coming designers a chance to shine, thus the American Design Club was born.  With a small group of founding members the AmDC has given designers the opportunity to exhibit work and broadcast themselves to the community.  Kiel continues to encourage the creative elite by thinking of new and exciting ways to showcase innovative objects.  He maintains a studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.  Check out his stuff.  Bravo.  Shot on Church Street. Out-take shot on Varick Street.

Sidenote:

“Do you think people will be like… ‘look at that fuck’n hipster wearing green pants and red socks?’…”

“Probably, hilarious.  I should comment under my posting… ‘stupid hipster, I bet he has a moustache as well’…”

He does. DFB
