downtownfrombehind (DFB) is a photographic series capturing subjects riding their bike from behind on some 200+ streets, avenues and lanes below 14th street in New York City.

The result is an environmental portrait for each street and subject with a goal to highlight a set of individuals, emerging and established, each uniquely contributing; culturally, socially and physically, to make this part of the city what it is today.

The project has been widely covered in the press, from New York Times, Huffington Post, Coolhunting, Vogue, Nylon Magazine and many blogs (thankyou).

Subjects photographed to date include industrial designers, architects, creative directors, restauranteurs, entrepreneurs, hoteliers, artists and academics.

PRINCE STREET.

PRINCE STREET, Andrew Carmellini, Chef, Restaurateur, Moonlight Recording Artist and American Traveler for Downtownfrombehind.

Some time mid 2009 Andrew Carmellini, aka AC, signed the lease on 131 Sullivan Street at the corner of Prince.  “I’ve been totally obsessed with this corner for a long time,” he says.  ”When I caught wind that the old Cub Room was available I was all over it.”  AC and his partners (finally) re-opened the space as The Dutch in April 2010 - an American cafe and all-around solid place to be whenever it pleases you. “We really liked the sound of The Dutch - its a bit old school, a little bit Damon Runyoneque … Also, its not the name of a type of apple, local radish or rare squash.”

DFB first met AC at one of his other NY hot spots, Locanda Verde.  Nestled in Robert Di Niro’s luxury Tribeca digs, The Greenwich Hotel, five delicious appetizers and equally as many complimentary wines later, it was clear AC means business.   We’re so happy there’s a new spot on Prince Street for great atmosphere and food. Check out The Dutch. DFB.
